Life has switched a gear these last two years for one reason I have never mentioned. It all comes down to my Daughter and the fury of softball games that has slowed my adventures to a halt. Anyone who has a kid on a travel ball team knows that you are either driving, eating or sitting at a field all weekend every weekend and that called summer. This season I have been lucky and the coach let me help keep the practices running smooth and also to get on the field and help with first base. My daughter is not fond of me coaching first base and actually today I ticked her off. Teenage girl not hustling to first base and letting her know in front of everyone nearby. I wont go any further than half-assing is something I don't appreciate. In the end win or lose, you have to make it fun and sometime it's weird and something else. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
Here is my issue and it's with the disappointment I had with the KLR Trans Tank Bag. Right out of the box the tank bra portion of it was stitched too tight to the point that i was worried about it breaking. The gas cap hole was not round anymore but a huge oval shape that I could fit two gas caps in the spot. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiNln9cV6jFONbsZzMOD9ZkROh8VyGEfIUViVzqVBAh3gZRsZmhX4Hbk_8_FLHxtQBV9efJmOu39jXaPivU15BYoPaqc9hzQS6M4YFzynVJRcJ007_SQJ7SqvT35_uHbegES6evPw_-1e2/s1600/20150207_095448.jpg" height="225" width="400" /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
On the first try zipping the bag to the bra the zipper tape failed. Another KLR rider put almost the same exact picture up on Amazon for his review of the bag. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Look how the end of the zipper is going away into the corner of the bag. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then the zipper on the bag side was such low quality that when I pulled
it across to close it, the starting point opened up and came undone to
the end point. It completely failed on the first try. As a safety issue
this could be really bad on a ride with the zipper failing and the bag
falling off to the side and interfering with the steering.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I returned this and let Kawasaki know my issues with this and I have zero expectations of them caring at all.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
It's been about fifteen years since I worked the Art of the Motorcycle show at the Field museum and the Britten is one of two bikes that I never quit staring at and standing next to when I had the chance. A lot of people would look at it and thought it was all just for looks and never really made a mark in racing or even really ran.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br />Over the years I realized that besides loving everything on two wheels, that I have a small obsession with GPS units. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaCgfzR7MRxmMmeT71dS_-p_cz5iAiZotpXuW0m3yNLIqCaai0ZRmdvqXkWiICOcUb5tXRbaDrSUgeYk8UNfnsLzuz9VYE37QJeVC80bWJg1E09OTfJLoO3sW7yO_BBTvljhTF1aKlcY-O/s1600/IMG_4498.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaCgfzR7MRxmMmeT71dS_-p_cz5iAiZotpXuW0m3yNLIqCaai0ZRmdvqXkWiICOcUb5tXRbaDrSUgeYk8UNfnsLzuz9VYE37QJeVC80bWJg1E09OTfJLoO3sW7yO_BBTvljhTF1aKlcY-O/s1600/IMG_4498.jpg" height="240" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The GPS 3 was my first and I don't remember what store I picked it up from or what I paid for it. It was also mounted with a touratech system that I bought from cycoactive back in 1995. Looking back now it was so primitive and only showed interstate and had zero routing options. surprisingly the old girl still works and is on my buddys bike. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjKxMJusJDEG2e0agdmftav-JMWwLThejcguejGREd-32YP-Dh_7ZTTaaDMghp1KaULb6Ys-Oad-wUcoE1x6zcnxhb3HN5JOlLaWr_xgVbCkAN5EK2o8RRt0Nt-FKQH9XJniWkqbLeCIF/s1600/100_0020.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWjKxMJusJDEG2e0agdmftav-JMWwLThejcguejGREd-32YP-Dh_7ZTTaaDMghp1KaULb6Ys-Oad-wUcoE1x6zcnxhb3HN5JOlLaWr_xgVbCkAN5EK2o8RRt0Nt-FKQH9XJniWkqbLeCIF/s1600/100_0020.JPG" height="240" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The original Streetpilot mounted to a RAM system. Big clunky and orange. I also had a touratech mount for this one but I can find the picture. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg72q_XgFTo1yR_FBiDc8isB1qwPW09S4ZFJY5B6QWPFcri9H0R8UzakvofhoTTlX07i9iVnDx0dJIA0jbqvX-_m7357TvgXU96MbTnBeGo9LhSv9KFS5t5feY8xWsrhNQrVn8do2KIfzXF/s1600/IMG_0372.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg72q_XgFTo1yR_FBiDc8isB1qwPW09S4ZFJY5B6QWPFcri9H0R8UzakvofhoTTlX07i9iVnDx0dJIA0jbqvX-_m7357TvgXU96MbTnBeGo9LhSv9KFS5t5feY8xWsrhNQrVn8do2KIfzXF/s1600/IMG_0372.JPG" height="208" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Next was my bargain Ebay special, the 2610 and my first unit that auto-routed. Love or hate it, auto-route at the least gave you some kind of idea when you might get to the hotel. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjobJd5RjJuoCyp0WiJeCl79TJph1TRuT5SaH98XFRuKFiTuo6i7OWjS31JuTtuo28BWyXvdivsPPBHjmoODs8WAIUo59zICUoicNjfUeDUeq4XfPhfAYBYSnx3kIZK7IZmh0K9Gng4M82B/s1600/DSC00796.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjobJd5RjJuoCyp0WiJeCl79TJph1TRuT5SaH98XFRuKFiTuo6i7OWjS31JuTtuo28BWyXvdivsPPBHjmoODs8WAIUo59zICUoicNjfUeDUeq4XfPhfAYBYSnx3kIZK7IZmh0K9Gng4M82B/s1600/DSC00796.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Then I had the a supernatural digitizer death that made me have to bail out of my trans-wisconsin trail trip. It actually in a weird way gave me the idea to buy broken 2610 units with good digitizers and swap them into the 2820 units that had bad digitizers. Buy a 2610 for 10 bucks and a 2820 for 35 bucks and flip out the screen and sell it for 150 bucks or more. I made some good money doing this till people stopped wanting them.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyCTmZKsteW5vfL4sVt7IyuEyCBQVhserW7RykpYt5OrnvWARUcZFc_hUEYVxmRqqKShakumQ46qAj8rst4G0PKLQ7vMLq9cUvKWONxfZhjs-vFlLNbVxjIoJclq1ivgLRS6584vEXzWu/s1600/DSC00871.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEigyCTmZKsteW5vfL4sVt7IyuEyCBQVhserW7RykpYt5OrnvWARUcZFc_hUEYVxmRqqKShakumQ46qAj8rst4G0PKLQ7vMLq9cUvKWONxfZhjs-vFlLNbVxjIoJclq1ivgLRS6584vEXzWu/s1600/DSC00871.JPG" height="180" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The 2820 was a really good unit and was just big like the 2610 and was my first with the NT map format. It had XM radio but people complained on how well it worked and would also need a bluetooth dongle to transmit in stereo to my motorcycle headset. </div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIon19OxXMGkq_oBQwvQOmE7GwtD41oCeHHpy43UwFXxaV0bAmOVT8L4xqtbwS4vHVgfkGdUbokLcEtRxyv_wZ-dMoQwgouLD0Tp9JPZTXm0iAbZA2y1V4T9NVz0NSG-md-Bo156DbWzDw/s1600/IMG_3378.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgIon19OxXMGkq_oBQwvQOmE7GwtD41oCeHHpy43UwFXxaV0bAmOVT8L4xqtbwS4vHVgfkGdUbokLcEtRxyv_wZ-dMoQwgouLD0Tp9JPZTXm0iAbZA2y1V4T9NVz0NSG-md-Bo156DbWzDw/s1600/IMG_3378.JPG" height="213" width="320" /> </a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The Zumo 550 and mount was also a Ebay special because it had a bad LCD screen. I put a screen and digitizer in it and it worked well. The XM was good but also need a dongle to transmit to the helmet. The bad part was the phone would not operate with dongle on. The day the unit came in the mail I happened to drop in a pawn shop and bought a zumo 550 for 9.99 and it worked great and found out the unit was never registered and Garmin gave me a free map update. I resold it for $290 and it made up the money. :) </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
This is my current bargain, the Harley zumo 665 that I found on Craigslist. The ad was stating the guy only wanted $250 and I was trying to find what the scam was. With a few emails later and it seemed good so I rode up the Kenosha WI. on the fourth of july. The owner just got it back from Garmin from a refurbish because the on/off button fell out somewhere between Montana and Wisconsin. He was selling it because he just bought a new HD that has navigation built into the bike. </div>

<br />
<span style="font-size: medium;"> One thing close to home I for some reason I had a hard time getting around to visit was poor Paul. He was beautiful with detail, even from the distance that I parked from. Compared to <a href="http://fattkaws-rides.blogspot.com/2012/05/big-woman-scare-me.html">Marilyn Monroe</a> that was in Chicago two years ago, Paul wins. I don’t know if he is tired from a hard days work or his blue Ox went missing.</span><br />

<br />
Well the custom domain name is gone and I’m back to the name I originally created years ago, so II f you found me again just make sure to reset your bookmark. <br />
<br />
I decided to ditch my Garmin 2820 over the winter and I picked up a broken zumo 550 on E-bay. It had a bad screen and it was a simple swap out with Chinese replacement also off of E-bay. It worked out very well so I set-up the bike for the works. Locking high isolation touratech mount, XM antenna and a Bluetooth transmitter. The reason for the transmitter is because the zumo will not broadcast the XM to my helmet headset. The few test rides have been flawless and the zumo is a load faster with processing than the old 2820.<br />

<br />
Next up was ditching the old 35 watt PIAA light the were warping and the lenses kept falling off. The <a href="http://www.totron.com/products/category/18/led-driving-lights">Totron</a> LEDs are brighter than the old girls and leave me some wattage to keep the seat and grip heat on without my voltage monitor yelling at me. The one thing I did do was Loctite all 7 bolts in the front of the lamp. You cant really see it but the number 7 bolt is in the dead center of the reflector. This should help with the large amount of vibration that the KLR make. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
My first bike was a 1974 MR50 that I bought from my cousin Steve. I can very much blame him for this addiction to motorcycles. It was a bike he picked up from a neighbor that was well used and just needed the points cleaned up and the plug cleaned to keep it running. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I remember begging him to let me ride it in his front lawn and he was reluctant since my Mom hated motorcycles. Steve gave in and also called out my other cousins (Steve's daughters) from the house to learn how to use a clutch and ride the bike. Both of the girls did a good job getting the clutch out, while I had hard time getting it going but when I did, man was I hooked. It was like the worlds biggest adrenalin rush. I remember not wanting to get off and when I did I was just shaking. The deal was for me to not mention the riding lesson to my Mom but that was impossible and we bought it a week later. We had trails about a mile away, illegal trails but the cops drove suburbans and I guess not much of a threat. So that's what I did on the weekend and on the weekdays it was a million wheelies and doughnuts in the driveway.<br />
BTW: this is not a pic of my personal bike. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The Chicago reality check is in full swing this winter as we are being plastered with the most snow I can remember since being a kid in the early 80's. I haven't been on the bike for about three months and right now I'm missing my old beater. She was a 1974 KS125 Kawasaki and very fun in the snow. It was not so great for wheelies but it was the queen of the power slide. Hope the old girl is still running and the owner is keeping her happy. Do you ever wonder what happened to your old bikes???</div>

The front brake has been needing a complete freshening up since I bought the smoky old girl 16 years ago. Back then finding parts was hard to do but now with the magic of E-bay and specialist bike sites with reproduction parts the brakes are deemed done. Why did it take me so long to get it done?? Maybe I was just waiting for my son to grow up and help. That sounds like a good excuse!<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhwSirO2o6YiSiYlUYHT0boWPvSiltYj6fh5gmhCbw9qc2D6KcgjlFbKXXywEPoXxVQ30FfhWHquDOH9qzBnXScQsnzRdXV7t77TfsggaWzMwORZDCirGKO-dcR1_p1oh7ArKBXTBqB_whp/s1600-h/DSCF00243.jpg"><img title="DSCF0024" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="DSCF0024" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiC3X8FsrZnIpz4qCChTPZvM7NKXdBdLTI3k0xMylroJpWugMf9jqwjjQUPSyDgCWYFV-OTbC_c15PLy2DYncUEVRJ2TjsG-ymcCjSZEUeAoAk9slTskgrhjFdBSyt8ARkG0Bnon3LrnY9-/?imgmax=800" width="512" height="384"></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhuK8V6AQ6WvaUOBmAV8d14f3F1eaLnU48Yug8P5u-3B1HSWRGm_q8C2aMxtS71Zar80uZxeRAyXVguGDdad0pwn2owvGqYTAGZ5WgY6h9c6d59OgVpQ2G7ZuBEAhhxHAy1cAv6qV-nXsvV/s1600-h/DSCF00263.jpg"><img title="DSCF0026" style="margin: 0px; display: inline" alt="DSCF0026" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh7kuwYN266EWgjswzFMiN6rf0rCtXmB001PGOPSeELIkdNlZ0y4LcVAylJl6jy4QqoA8w4a0FOeDwE0U-6QmIirzXkt72rXTV4AR9go4Tkr5WvGazZEfkzhnsPf7vUfrq1uryXTWJXecqR/?imgmax=800" width="512" height="384"></a> </p> <p align="center"> The piston seal groves were really bad and were worse than when I rebuilt the rear caliper. </p> <p><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5ELFmSeKGkynEvawT5j3QrwTXrQh2gkSHRHLoF8MgC_YHRHu78a9yIVXFHhrVRSeBBV41eawJ__ZxSG7WvtjPyF_uktpZqDHZeh3PCUzqi77kvyVZ3mWc0CrZNcCi6rTRKKEW0yAtTQ4V/s1600-h/DSCF00417.jpg"><img title="DSCF0041" style="display: inline" alt="DSCF0041" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiQ0FHjkNQuQwmUXBF2CPnuIdw2sXULLwIWhT4eY223xYG8DeFTxnYRozcpgLOYJ3rON3h7fFBVZSkO5NY0B6_h2CWz5l34jHXg6ibyBDXDXXLjyrq_fA_q3yDr_fEvuPuybLm_PkdrJOnY/?imgmax=800" width="512" height="384"></a></p> <p> </p> <p align="center">Pretty rough stuff getting the pistons out after 38 years of yuck. Years ago my Grandmother gave me these wonderful photos of my Grandpa on his Indian's. I only had the chance to meet him once that I remember and it happened at the age of 4. Not much of a memory other than me hiding behind my Dad and thinking Grandpa always looked mad. Talking to my Aunt's that is also what their boyfriend's thought of my Grandpa also. The angry look is also with my Dad and continues with me. Keeps the boys in check. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
The only thing that my Grandmother could tell me was one of the bikes was a 1926. The picture above and below is the same bike with and without the passenger seat. The very bottom photo is a different Indian by looking at the front suspension rods not passing through the fender and also it does not have the sidecar attachment rod on the double down tubes. If you got a clue as to what year and model these are, drop me a comment. </div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I'm seriously missing being on the bike right now. Last summer was a big wash with any big rides. I was stuck and had to save cash with the threat of our union strike, all I could do was little local riding. Since I lived here (southwest Chicago) my whole life, it was very boring. I keep finding myself going back into old ride pictures. I need to get my ass in gear in the garage and do valve checks on the KLR and install some new LED fog lights. The old RD 400 needs the front caliper rebuilt along with a fresh master cylinder. I plan on doing a little before and after post on the brake caliper rebuild.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The big positive thing I plan for next year is to get to the Bonneville salt flats to watch and also get a clear understanding of the rules to see what I can build. I noticed some guys are using the KLR and setting records for stock top speed. I just need a clear understanding what is considered "stock" if you know what I mean. </div>

<span style="font-size: small;">Saturday was just a simple visit back out to the Cheese Trail that starts in Monroe WI. The temps were low in the morning so I put the KLR in the back of my truck and hauled her there. It was still only 40F when I got to the trail-head and my winter gear was perfect. Also the parking lot only had two other trucks parked so I knew the trail would be quiet. </span><br />

This girl must be the troublemaker of the gang with the bell around her neck. She was the only one who didn't get up and move away from me. She actually got closer to see what I was up to. Once she checked me out, all the other cows went into a mooing frenzy and slowly started to gather to the fence I was shooting at. It was neat at first and made for some nice photos but it made me a little nervous with thirty plus cows up against a old dilapidated barbwire fence. They either wanted out or food. </div>

</div>
Yes the old Blue Ant headset has died again. That makes this three times in three years. The first headset was free since it was six months old when it failed. I called for the second one and blue ant swore they were sending out another for free but at the same time I noticed a lack of stock for months on the web page and it never came. I ended up getting one on Ebay. Not too long after this the interphone F5 came out and is a separate company from blue ant and they supply parts for the old F4.<br />
The old news fail point is right at the connector where the wires are soldered in the elbow to the board. Twisting and bending eventually breaks the wire off and you loose one of the speakers. The new interphone company has beefed up the connector and it seems like the wire don't move as much under the black protective insulation. <a href="http://interphonewireless.com/products/accessories/interphone-f4-dual-microphone-replacement-headset-micinterphonef4uni/" target="_blank">>NEW INTERPHONE PAGE<</a><br />

Speakers are different looking but provide the same great volume as the original. The new covering (on the left) give a little cushioning over the old. On a big day ride the old speakers would press into the cartilage of my ears and cause a slight ache and the new pads have not yet done this to me.</div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
I did the same old trick with a extra piece of soft Velcro to hold the wire back and make a nice soft loop into the helmet. This made the old design last longer and if the new design is still flawed it will help too. Lets just hope the got it right otherwise I'm done with it and going with the F5 unit. </div>

Vacation time and out for my first and only short road trip for the year. My riding buddy switched jobs and could not come along so I was solo once again. The plan of attack was to ride backroads all the way down to the <a href="http://www.fs.usda.gov/shawnee" target="_blank">Shawnee forest</a> at the southern tip of Illinois and get some hiking in.</div>
The first stop down was Arcola for a late breakfast and it was a nice surprise to see these murals all over town. Here is a<a href="http://www.arcolaillinois.org/index.asp?SEC=6F3E0BF9-ACBE-4F42-A1F8-2380D7CEA0C3&Type=B_BASIC" target="_blank"> >>link<<</a> for more info why these are all over the main strip. <br />

<br />
I would of shot them all but the weather was 95F+ and wearing full gear with hours more seat time to be done, I just stopped for these two. They were done about a year ago and still look nice and bright. <br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
So this is such a neat treat to find smack in the middle of two great hiking spots, Garden of the gods and then Rim Rock.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
My treehouse was at this great place called <a href="http://www.timberridgeoutpost.com/treehouse/#sthash.LCKW22bK.dpbs" target="_blank">Timber Ridge Outpost & Cabins</a>. What a unique placed to stay once again like last year when I did the <a href="http://www.fattkaw.com/2012/04/mammoth-cave-for-weekend.html" target="_blank">wigwam village</a>. The placed was clean and fresh and the A/C was kicking for my sweaty beat soul. I was amazed by how comfy the house was and to be up in the treetop was neat. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Marty and Elizabeth are the owners and are very nice. They are retired out of the Chicago area and actually Marty is from my town of Romeoville.</div>

The house looks small from ground level but my bike looks small from the deck all the way up here. It can actually sleep six and the best part was complementary coffee and not one of those crappy hotel room machines but a real maker with a whole can of grounds at my liking. </div>

My mourning coffee spot before spread all my clothes and gear all about. The things you see and hear are awesome on the deck. During the day I saw a humming bird hanging around, praying mantis, bullfrogs and little lizards that escaped my camera lens. As the sunset on my first night I went out to a open area and watched two bats dance with each other, catching what was for them breakfast. Night time sounds were tree frogs, cicadas, owl, coyote and some cow that sounded sad it was in a field at night. </div>

Indian point overlook trail is a definite must do. 1.7mile loop and not too hard with nice cool weather. The one thing I can tell you is I got lost or I should say not on the intended trail. The state has blue arrows on the trees and somewhere along the loop I missed the turn. I took a much bigger loop and got to see a more rock face walls and really enjoyed it. </div>

I'm kidding but I did have my worries of Italian electronics and how they would hold up. First issue was the remote would not pop the trunk at times or just not at all. The two options that would get it working would be to unlatch the box from the mounting plate or open the box with the key and hit the learn button. This would make it work for a while but never long.<br />
The contacts have been breaking down from vibration or in a more defined reason it's called <a href="http://delphi.com/connectors/assets/product_brochure/So%20What2.pdf" target="_blank">fretting</a>. My fix for this is to wipe the contacts off with your finger and add a dab of <a href="http://www.dxengineering.com/parts/umi-22058?seid=dxese1&gclid=CPWnyb6VuLkCFbFDMgodwVAAhA" target="_blank">Di-electric grease.</a> It's been working non-stop for the last month without resetting.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7YfFdOVfE8Q1h0oKhPqMV5hqCGzTbFaxcfbWCz-E_9OxlUncTYlLjVL03nJLwl2rQjwSusFo0eZuAxX6q57KxMW5knSkdcFicekUshpOrTPuzsJwutdsqpBi2F16zwRxzAONKyaSLJ_0S/s1600/IMG_3171.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg7YfFdOVfE8Q1h0oKhPqMV5hqCGzTbFaxcfbWCz-E_9OxlUncTYlLjVL03nJLwl2rQjwSusFo0eZuAxX6q57KxMW5knSkdcFicekUshpOrTPuzsJwutdsqpBi2F16zwRxzAONKyaSLJ_0S/s320/IMG_3171.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
This the base plate contact with grease added and a little dirty but not too bad. I figured I'll clean and grease it with every bike wash. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
you can see the erosion of the contacts from the vibration and electricity going through it at the same time. </div>

The box contacts are looking better than the base plate contacts. </div>

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8q1MAaleUkHthOGiWl_n0gaUTGsJqL7mXsPG6kQu0HPNKL9zmhr6zRntfMrf44jkSHckb26CuaLVs-t7htpcfR3pjymSN_7wB6dcNX_cufW8WL4cVXkapWoZhq_fFNynwYrK-eTp7tc1C/s1600/IMG_3175.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg8q1MAaleUkHthOGiWl_n0gaUTGsJqL7mXsPG6kQu0HPNKL9zmhr6zRntfMrf44jkSHckb26CuaLVs-t7htpcfR3pjymSN_7wB6dcNX_cufW8WL4cVXkapWoZhq_fFNynwYrK-eTp7tc1C/s320/IMG_3175.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
Little dab of fresh grease and maybe a little too much. A </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Tube of grease should last you a few years unless you really ride in dusty areas or wash your bike a lot.</div>
<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second issue was the box lid not staying up. The problem was worse when it was warmer out and in the sun. I think the spacer in the middle of the lid hinge is a hard rubber. </div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
This is a very simple fix that you can really mess up with a ham fist, so please be soft and have some finesse. Take the hinge off the box with the two screws and fold the ends together. Put the peened side up on a very hard surface. Use a ball peened hammer and any other light hammer. Ball peened end goes on the peened area of the hinge and lightly tap the peening hammers flat side. Also, you will need a helper unless you have three hands! Just tap it and see if you made a change in the stiffness of the hinge. Repeat till you can tell a difference and it won't take much of a change to keep the lid up. Remember your going to do this to both hinges so it's really going to be stiffer. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The last thing was the led brake lights died in less than 400 miles. Now that's some durability---NOT!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I was pretty pissed with this one just because it failed so quick. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
What you see in my hand is the lid side of the led contacts. Givi thinks it a good idea to soldier or tin the ends of the wires and then stick them in and jam the set screws down. The wires were also routed bad and stuck between two sections of trim. Not enough to damage it but not where it was meant to be. </div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I just noted the blk/wht wires went to the right contact and cut the wires back a little and re-stripped and put them back in. You will need a little screwdriver to do the fix and I suggest the smallest handle so you have less torque and will avoid over tightening the set screws. I also zip-tied the wires as you can see to cut vibration. This fix has lasted 4000 miles. </div>

Being one for art and one of the few reasons I made it out of high school by having a little inner school escape with art class, I found it really nice to see this mural being made. Rob is also a art teacher and in some ways in the same boat as me as the way he made it through school.<br />
I stopped for a picture and to actually stop and take all in and how much him and his partner on the project have gotten done. I didn't go there with the intention to chat but Rob walked over to me and we had a great conversation about the mural and the story is brings. <a href="http://lemontdowntown.com/n/mural.htm" rel="nofollow" target="_blank"><link></link></a><br />
We had a little conversation about how schools are dropping the extras like art, auto shop, woodworking and anything that you really have to combined the hands and the mind to create. <br />
This is Rob's second mural in Lemont IL and kudos to the town for allowing him to do his best..FATTKAWhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10633451090151094353noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7402517558195429131.post-32123955410952468162013-07-16T17:58:00.001-05:002013-07-16T17:58:23.244-05:00Displacement is good. <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The daily commute was going fine until halfway home the KLR decided to give me the old dead throttle. Hmm, that's odd 175 miles and time for reserve? So I flip the petcock and leave the throttle closed for a few seconds and retry and it's kind of running. Another 1/4 mile down the road and she's done and a little panic comes over me as I have a kid at home that needs to be at a softball game in a hour. Anger also rushes in as a dead engine is not supposed to happen on a mechanics bike and with that rush of anger as the bike silently rolls down the big hill in the town I'm passing through, I give the gas cap a whack with my hand. I come to the bottom of the hill and jump off to look at the fuel filter and see gas rushing through it like I just turned it on after a rebuild. DAMN TANK VENT! Guess I have the old Fonzie touch as the whack must of unstuck the vent and it fired right up. <br />
<br />
Once I had time I removed the cap and gutted it and pulled out these pieces. I could of just cleaned them up and gave them a shot of WD-40 but why? After 1K removed I have had no problems running. <br />

Flipping through some old pictures and found two old shots. My old Ninja was really my favorite bike that I have owned over the years. She was a little heavy but the engine was good and the riding posture was way better than my current ZX-10. We went 36K together and she was getting a little tired as the miles went up. </div>
